| Beschrijving voorzijde | A quarter-section cut from a Spanish colonial silver cob (macuquina) coin, bearing the Type I rectangular countermark of Tortola applied in the field. The countermark consists of a recessed cartouche displaying the legend TORTOLA in incuse Latin capital letters, surmounted by a partial representation of a crowned lion passant — an element derived from the British royal arms — stamped onto the irregular silver planchet. The underlying host coin retains vestiges of its original Spanish colonial design, including portions of a cross and shield motif characteristic of early Spanish-American milled or cob coinage, though largely obscured by wear and the cutting process. The piece exhibits the rough, irregular outline typical of cut and countermarked emergency currency issued in the British Caribbean territories during the early nineteenth century. |
