| Obverse description | The obverse features the South African coat of arms surmounted by a royal crown, displayed in high relief at centre. The quartered shield depicts the heraldic emblems of the four former colonies: an anchor, a lion passant, a wagon, and a tree, with a central escutcheon. The bilingual legend SOUTH AFRICA and SUID-AFRIKA curves around the periphery, interrupted at left and right by ornamental floral stops. The denomination 2½ SHILLINGS and the date 19 42 appear flanking the shield, with the engraver's initials KG incorporated into the design. The coin is struck on a milled-edge planchet with a fine toothed border. |
