Additional information

South Africa's wartime mint trials of 1942 reflect a genuine materials crisis: with silver diverted toward Allied strategic needs, the Pretoria Mint explored base-metal substitutes for the higher denomination coinage. Brass was among several alloys evaluated before the decision was ultimately made to retain silver for the 2½ Shilling denomination through the war years — meaning trials like this one never advanced to circulation.

The Pn10 designation places it firmly in the pattern series, not a proposed issue that came close to adoption.
