Southern Rhodesia switched from silver to copper-nickel for this denomination in 1947, a direct consequence of postwar silver shortages and British Treasury pressure to conserve the metal across colonial minting programs. The timing placed these copper-nickel strikes squarely within the territory's final decade of self-governance before the political turbulence of federation with Northern Rhodesia and Nyasaland in 1953.
KM#23 pieces dated 1948–1952 were struck at the Royal Mint in London, not in Africa.
