Southern Rhodesia gained the right to issue its own coinage in 1932, a consequence of achieving self-governing colony status a decade earlier. The florin-sized silver pieces produced between 1939 and 1942 were struck at the Royal Mint in London and, later, Pretoria — wartime logistics made the shift necessary as Atlantic shipping lanes became increasingly hazardous.
The 1942 Pretoria strikes are distinguishable by collectors familiar with the series and carry a modest premium over their London counterparts.
