GEORGIVS V D. G. BRITT: OMN: REX F. D. IND: IMP: |
| توضیحات پشت سکه |
A tall, centrally placed palm tree dominates the field, its fronds spreading symmetrically and its base flanked by low tropical vegetation. The date 1920 is divided by the trunk of the palm tree, with 19 to the left and 20 to the right, rendered in large numerals at mid-field. The legend BRITISH WEST AFRICA arcs above along the upper periphery, while TWO SHILLINGS curves along the lower periphery, separated from the central design by decorative scroll ornaments. An inner beaded border frames the entire composition. |

British West Africa's silver coinage was struck at multiple mints across Britain depending on wartime and postwar industrial capacity — the 1920 two-shilling pieces came from the Royal Mint and its Heaton branch in Birmingham. That same year, the British government halved the silver fineness of domestic UK coinage from .925 to .500, and the colonial issues followed suit. It was a fiscal response to the post-WWI silver price spike, which had briefly made the bullion value of pre-war coins exceed their face value.
KM#13a specifically denotes the .500 fineness version, distinguishing it from the earlier fine-silver strikes of the same type.
