Uganda's 1966 coinage was the country's first independent issue following the abolition of the East African Currency Board, which had supplied the region's money since 1919. The break was politically deliberate — Milton Obote's government wanted a distinctly Ugandan currency rather than the shared East African shilling that tied Uganda monetarily to Kenya and Tanzania.
The Royal Mint struck this series on behalf of the Bank of Uganda in its inaugural year of operation.
