Obverse description A rare Siege-type emergency note printed on coarse hessian (burlap) cloth, handwritten and rubber-stamped in black ink. An oval regimental seal of the Border Scouts, Upington is impressed at the left, with handwritten text in the centre reading 'Pay to bearer the sum of two shillings for pay' and a handwritten denomination of '/ 2 -' at lower left. The note is countersigned in manuscript at lower right by the issuing officer.
