Issued to mark the centenary of the first Rothschild-funded agricultural settlements in Palestine — Rishon LeZion and Rosh Pinna were both established in 1882 — this coin commemorates Baron Edmond de Rothschild's sustained financial intervention that kept those early colonies solvent when Ottoman land pressures and crop failures had brought them to the edge of collapse. His total expenditure on Palestinian settlement before 1900 exceeded £1.6 million.
