| Obverse description | Central field dominated by a multi-line Persian royal legend within an irregular cartouche, proclaiming the ruler's devotion to the Imam Mahdi and his lineage. The legend identifies Sultan Abu'l-Muzaffar Muhammad Shah, son of Tahmasp al-Husayni, with the prayer 'may God perpetuate his reign.' The mint name Ganja and the AH date 988 are inscribed in the lower portion of the field. Surrounding marginal inscriptions fill the flan, characteristic of Safavid hammered coinage. The entire design is executed in Nasta'liq-influenced calligraphy on an irregularly shaped, slightly convex flan. |
