Muhammad Khudabanda — the name itself means "servant of God" — was effectively a compromise ruler, placed on the Safavid throne in 1578 largely because his near-blindness was thought to make him politically manageable. His reign was defined by factional warfare among the Qizilbash tribal confederacy and simultaneous Ottoman and Uzbek pressure on the empire's frontiers. The Shiraz mint remained active throughout these upheavals, serving the fiscal needs of Fars province even as central authority frayed.
The "Muhammadi" denomination designation on this type reflects the Safavid practice of naming coin values after the reigning shah's given name — a convention that shifted with each succession.
