| Reverse description | The reverse is dominated by a central rectangular cartouche enclosing the Shi'a shahada and declaration of faith in nasta'liq script: 'La ilaha illa Allah, Muhammad rasul Allah, Ali wali Allah.' Surrounding the central cartouche, arranged in the field and margins, are the names of the Twelve Imams of Twelver Shi'a Islam. A dotted border frames the inner cartouche, and further inscriptions extend to the rim of the irregular flan. The reverse design is entirely epigraphic, affirming the Safavid state's Twelver Shi'a identity. The hammered strike results in some weakness at the edges, typical of early Safavid silver coinage. |
