Isma'il I founded the Safavid dynasty in 1501 and almost immediately made Twelver Shi'a Islam the state religion of Iran — a politically explosive declaration that put him in direct confrontation with the Sunni Ottoman Empire to the west and the Uzbeks to the east. The coinage struck at Qazvīn during this window reflects that founding moment; these are among the earliest issues produced under a polity that would define Iranian identity for over two centuries.
The 1514 defeat at Chaldiran, where Ottoman artillery routed Isma'il's cavalry, fell just after this issue's production window closed. Isma'il never led another campaign personally.
