Issued as part of the FAO's ongoing push to embed agricultural awareness into everyday coinage, this piece belongs to a program that placed food security messaging on the coins of dozens of developing nations from the 1960s onward. Samoa's participation was modest — small denominations, limited distribution — and most of these pieces saw little genuine circulation before the country's coinage infrastructure shifted. Tanumafili II, who held office until his death in 2007, was the world's last remaining head of state to have been born a subject of the British Empire.
