San Marino's gold scudi series of the 1980s and 1990s were struck under an arrangement allowing the republic to issue commemorative coinage beyond what its monetary agreement with Italy would otherwise permit. The 1991 "Peace and Freedom" issue appeared the same year the Soviet Union dissolved — though the thematic connection was almost certainly coincidental, the timing gave the issue an unintended historical resonance that dealers were quick to exploit in marketing.
Farouk reference Fr#53 places this squarely in the modern San Marino gold sequence, a collecting area that remains genuinely underappreciated relative to its mintage figures.
