The original campanile of St. Mark's collapsed without warning on the morning of July 14, 1902, falling in a neat pile of rubble that destroyed the Sansovino loggetta at its base but, remarkably, killed no one. The city of Venice resolved almost immediately to rebuild it "dov'era e com'era" — where it was and how it was — and the reconstructed tower was inaugurated in 1912 exactly on the 1,000th anniversary of the original's foundation. San Marino's 2012 issue marks the centenary of that reopening.
