San Marino issued this piece as part of its participation in the European Year of the Environment, a Council of Europe initiative that ran through 1987 and prompted several small states to produce commemorative gold. The republic's output from this period was largely aimed at the collector market — circulating gold coinage having no practical role in an economy that used Italian lira for everyday transactions.
