António Manoel de Vilhena served as Grand Master from 1722 until his death in 1736, a period during which the Order maintained its precarious grip on Malta while Ottoman naval power remained a genuine threat in the central Mediterranean. The 2 Scudi was the Order's principal large silver denomination, issued more for prestige and diplomatic use than everyday exchange — the island's actual commerce ran on far smaller copper and billon pieces.
Vilhena is better remembered for commissioning the fortified town of Città Vilhena, now Floriana, whose construction was underway precisely when these dies were cut.
