Antonio Manoel de Vilhena, a Portuguese nobleman, served as Grand Master from 1722 to 1736 and remains one of the most prolific builders in Maltese history — Fort Manoel and the town of Vilhena both bear his name. The Order's coinage under his tenure was struck at the Valletta mint, which operated with considerable autonomy from European monetary systems, issuing denominations scaled to local trade needs in the central Mediterranean rather than to any continental standard.
At 62.5 grams, this is among the heaviest silver pieces the Order produced, making die wear and uneven strikes endemic to the type. Survivors with full, sharp rims are substantially less common than the grade might otherwise suggest.
