The Sovereign Military Order of Malta occupies a peculiar position in numismatics: a sovereign entity without territory, issuing coins with no circulating function whatsoever. Following the loss of Malta to Napoleon in 1798, the Order's coinage became entirely ceremonial, struck for collectors and diplomatic exchange rather than commerce. The 1984 series continued that tradition, produced in limited quantities for the philatelic and numismatic market.
The "Angelo" designation refers to the Scudo d'Angelo, a denomination with roots in the Order's Maltese and Rhodian monetary history. At .986 fineness, the silver content exceeds sterling — a deliberate choice reflecting the Order's insistence on prestige over practicality.
