The Sovereign Military Order of Malta occupies a peculiar position in numismatics: a sovereign issuing authority without territory, recognized by over a hundred states, producing coins that are legal tender for an entity with no land borders and a population measured in the hundreds. The 1978 coinage program fell during the magistracy of Angelo de Mojana di Cologna, the 77th Grand Master, whose name this denomination carries — an unusual practice that ties each issue directly to the reigning head of the Order rather than to a monarch or republic.
