The Sovereign Military Order of Malta occupies a peculiar position in numismatics: a sovereign entity without territory, issuing legal tender accepted nowhere in ordinary commerce. Its modern coinage program, relaunched in the 1960s, functions primarily as a fundraising and collector vehicle. The 1992 2 Scudi falls squarely within that program under Grand Master Andrew Bertie, a British aristocrat who took the office in 1988 and would hold it until his death in 2008 — the longest-serving Grand Master of the modern era.
The .986 fineness is notably purer than standard sterling, a deliberate specification that distinguishes SMOM issues from conventional national coinage.
