Additional information

Issued to mark the 200th anniversary of the death of Prince Eugen of Savoy, the Austro-Hungarian military commander whose victories at Zenta, Blenheim, and Belgrade defined the limits of Ottoman expansion into Europe. By 1936, Austria was operating under the authoritarian Fatherland Front government of Engelbert Dollfuss's successor Kurt Schuschnigg, and the commemorative program of this period leaned heavily on martial Habsburg heroes — a pointed cultural gesture against both Nazi German pressure and domestic socialist opposition.

Schuschnigg's government would fall to the Anschluss just two years later.
