Louis Frederick of Württemberg-Mömpelgard ruled the County of Montbéliard — a Lutheran enclave surrounded by Catholic France and the Franche-Comté — during one of the most unstable periods in its history. This issue falls squarely within the Kipper und Wipperzeit, the currency debasement crisis of 1619–1623 that devastated coinage across the Holy Roman Empire. Montbéliard's issues from the immediately following years reflect the painful monetary stabilization that followed, as smaller territories scrambled to re-establish credible silver coinage after the debased flood receded.
