Julius Ernest ruled Dannenberg — one of the fragmented Brunswick-Lüneburg territorial splinters — from 1598 until his death in 1636, governing a principality so small and financially constrained that its coinage output was correspondingly thin. This 2 Schilling piece was struck in the opening year of the Thirty Years' War, a conflict that would devastate the Lower Saxon Circle where Dannenberg sat and eventually extinguish the principality itself; upon Julius Ernest's death without male heirs, Dannenberg was absorbed into Celle.
The Welter 712c attribution with the Bahrf 116b variant notation suggests minor die differences within what was already a limited run.
