| Obverse description | Within a plain inner circle, the royal cypher 'IR' (Ioannes Rex) appears in large Gothic letters at the centre of the field, surmounted by an open crown with pellet ornaments. Two pellet stops flank the monogram horizontally. The surrounding legend, separated from the central design by the inner circle, reads IOHAN · 3 · D : G · REX · SVEC · 69, incorporating the last two digits of the date and identifying Johan III as King of Sweden by the grace of God. The coin is struck on an irregular flan characteristic of hammered coinage of the period. |
