Dollfuss was assassinated on July 25, 1934, when Austrian Nazis stormed the Federal Chancellery as part of a failed coup attempt. He bled to death over several hours after being shot, with the conspirators reportedly refusing him medical attention or a priest. Austria issued this commemorative within months of his death — an unusual speed that reflects how urgently the ruling Fatherland Front needed a martyrdom narrative to legitimize its authoritarian project against both the socialist left and the Nazi right.
