Stade was under Swedish occupation by 1640, having been seized during the Thirty Years' War and formally ceded to Sweden at the Peace of Westphalia eight years later. This piece was struck while the city retained nominal municipal minting rights even under occupation — a circumstance that produced considerable variety in the local coinage as civic and occupying authorities negotiated control of the mint.
