The composition is rendered in the late Renaissance heraldic style typical of early seventeenth-century German municipal coinage. A circular Latin legend surrounds the central device, reading MON. Stade's independent coinage rights were perpetually contested — the city sat at the mouth of the Schwinge near the Elbe, making it commercially significant enough that both Hamburg and the Swedish crown repeatedly sought to absorb it. These schillings were struck during a narrow window before Sweden seized the city in 1648, reducing its minting authority permanently. The Bahrf reference places this type among a small documented sequence that saw interruptions tied directly to wartime disruptions during the opening years of the Thirty Years' War, which broke out in 1618.
