| 裏面の説明 | Central motif is a crowned imperial double-headed eagle displayed, with wings spread, rendered in the style typical of Holy Roman Empire coinage of the early seventeenth century. A shield or numeral indicating the denomination '16' (for 1/16 Thaler, i.e. 2 Schilling) is superimposed on the eagle's breast within an orb or roundel. The eagle bears a sceptre and orb in its talons. A beaded inner circle surrounds the device, and the circumferential legend invokes the authority of Emperor Charles V. Pellet or rosette stops separate the legend elements around the outer border. |

Hamburg's Schilling coinage of this period was produced under the city's independent monetary authority, which jealously guarded its minting rights against repeated pressure from the Holy Roman Emperor to conform to imperial coin standards. The years 1614–1617 fall squarely within the lead-up to the Kipper- und Wipperzeit, the currency crisis of 1619–1623 in which dozens of German mints — Hamburg among the more disciplined — debased their coinage catastrophically to exploit arbitrage between bullion and face values.
