Obverse description Central field depicts the rampant griffin passant, the heraldic emblem of the city of Rostock, rendered in relief with detailed feathering on the wings and stylized foliage at the base. The griffin faces left with one foreclaw raised, occupying the majority of the flan within a beaded inner circle. The Latin circular legend reads MONETA. NOVA. ROSTOCHIENS(I). and runs between the beaded border and the coin's rim, executed in Gothic-influenced letterforms characteristic of 16th-century North German municipal coinage.

Reverse description Central field features the crowned arms of Rostock displayed within a quatrefoil or multi-lobed shield, surmounted by a cross, rendered in the hammered style typical of late 16th-century North German civic coinage. The shield design is enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The surrounding Latin legend SIT. NOMEN. DOMINI. BENEDI. — an abbreviated invocation meaning 'Blessed be the name of the Lord' — runs along the outer margin between the beaded border and the coin's edge, with letters in an upright Gothic script.
