| Beschrijving voorzijde | The Latvian national coat of arms occupies the central field, depicting a quartered shield with a rising sun in the upper half and two addorsed lions rampant in the lower quarters, supported on either side by stylized ribbon scrolls. Three five-pointed stars arc above the shield, representing the three historical regions of Latvia. The legend LATVIJA curves along the lower rim beneath the shield in raised Latin lettering. The overall design is rendered in a clean, heraldic style characteristic of early 20th-century European coinage. |

Latvia's first independent coinage followed the declaration of independence in 1918, but currency stabilization took years — the santims series wasn't struck until 1922, after the lat replaced the provisional Latvian rublis. The 2 santimi was produced at the Latvian State Mint in Rīga, one of the few interwar mints established specifically to assert monetary independence after centuries of foreign rule under Swedish, Polish, and Russian administrations.
Production ran intermittently across the decade, with no coins struck for several years within the stated range. The series ended well before Soviet occupation in 1940 rendered all Latvian coinage obsolete.
