Reversbeschreibung A three-quarter facing bust of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose occupies the central field, depicted wearing his characteristic military-style cap and high-collared uniform jacket, with spectacles rendered in fine relief. The portrait is executed in a bold, medallic style with the subject's gaze directed upward and to the left. A bilingual legend encircles the bust: 'सुभाष चन्द्र बोस' in Devanagari and 'SUBHAS CHANDRA BOSE' in Latin script along the upper periphery. Along the lower rim, the commemorative inscription 'जन्मशती' in Devanagari, the centenary year '1997', and 'CENTENARY' in Latin script are inscribed. A mint mark appears in the lower field to indicate the issuing mint.

Zusätzliche Informationen

Issued to mark the centenary of Subhas Chandra Bose's birth, this commemorative was struck across both 1996 and 1997 — a two-year production window that reflects the scale of the official centennial observances the Indian government organized around the anniversary. Bose remains a genuinely contested figure in Indian political memory: a former Indian National Congress president who broke with Gandhi, formed the Azad Hind government-in-exile, and allied with the Axis powers to prosecute an armed campaign against British rule.

His death in a 1945 plane crash in Taiwan has never been fully accepted by a segment of the Indian public, and government inquiries into the circumstances continued as recently as 2006.
