| Beschrijving voorzijde | The Lion Capital of Ashoka, the national emblem of India, is depicted centrally in high relief, showing three lions atop an abacus decorated with a Dharma Chakra (wheel) flanked by a bull and a horse in low relief. Below the emblem, the motto सत्यमेव जयते (Satyameva Jayate, meaning 'Truth Alone Triumphs') is inscribed in Devanagari script. The numeral '2' appears prominently in the lower field, flanked by the denomination legends 'रूपये' (in Devanagari) to the left and 'RUPEES' (in Latin) to the right, both reading upward along the coin's edge. The country name appears in Devanagari 'भारत' at the upper left and 'INDIA' in Latin at the upper right, curving along the hendecagonal rim. |

The hendecagonal 2-rupee was introduced in 1982 as part of a broader effort to help visually impaired users distinguish denominations by shape alone — the eleven-sided form was specifically chosen because it is immediately identifiable by touch. The "National Integration" theme was a direct government response to sectarian violence and regional separatist movements that had intensified through the late 1970s and 1980s, most acutely in Punjab and Assam.
Production across this date range was split among the mints at Bombay, Calcutta, and Hyderabad, each carrying their own mint mark.
