Issued to mark the bicentenary of Louis Braille's birth, this coin was part of a coordinated global commemorative effort — Braille was born January 4, 1809, in Coupvray, France, and lost his sight in childhood following a workshop accident at his father's harness-making shop. India's participation reflected the scale of its visually impaired population, among the largest of any country in the world.
The coin incorporates tactile dots readable by touch — a functional design choice, not purely symbolic, making it one of the rare modern issues where the commemorative element is embedded in the minting method itself.
