| Obverse description | The obverse features the official FAO emblem at centre, depicted as a stylised wheat sheaf with the letters F, A, and O superimposed, surrounded by a circular band bearing the FAO motto FIAT PANIS and the founding and anniversary dates 1945-1995. The numeral 50 appears prominently at the top of the field, flanked by the legend ANNIVERSARY in Latin. Surrounding inscriptions in Sinhala, Tamil, and Latin read the equivalent of '50th Anniversary' and 'Food for All', arranged in three concentric registers. The entire design is contained within a beaded border. |

| Reverse description | The reverse displays a large stylised numeral 2 dominating the central field, rendered with horizontal line engraving for decorative effect. Trilingual denomination inscriptions appear across the centre of the field in Sinhala (රුපියල් දෙකයි), Tamil (இரண்டு ரூபாய்), and Latin (TWO RUPEES). The country name Sri Lanka is inscribed along the outer rim in all three scripts — Sinhala (ශ්රී ලංකා) at the top, Tamil (இலங்கை) at the left, and Latin (SRI LANKA) at the right — with the date 1995 positioned at the bottom. The design is framed by a beaded border. |

Issued as part of the global FAO coin program, which the Food and Agriculture Organization ran from the late 1960s onward to promote agricultural development themes through national minting programs. Sri Lanka was a consistent participant, using the series to highlight food security initiatives during a period when the country's economy was under sustained pressure from the ongoing civil conflict in the north and east.
