Beschrijving keerzijde The reverse of this red molded plastic token features a bold decorative sunburst or rosette pattern radiating from a central circular medallion. The medallion bears the denomination 2R in raised relief, with the numeral 2 and superscript R denoting two Rupees. The surrounding annular field is filled with concentric rings of elongated oval lobes and geometric lacework, all molded in dark relief against the red plastic ground, creating a striking ornamental effect characteristic of these Cocos (Keeling) Islands token issues.

Aanvullende informatie

The Clunies-Ross family ruled the Cocos (Keeling) Islands as a private fiefdom for over a century, and their plastic token coinage was the only currency permitted on the islands — Malay workers on the copra plantations were paid in these tokens, redeemable exclusively at the family-owned store. It was a closed economic loop by design. Australian authorities finally forced the abolition of the system in 1978, when the tokens were bought back at a fixed rate.
