Indian Railways marked its 150th anniversary in 2003, counting from the first passenger run on April 16, 1853 — a 21-mile journey from Bombay's Boribandar station to Thane, hauled by three locomotives named Sahib, Sindh, and Sultan. The network that began as a colonial infrastructure project to move raw materials to port had grown by 2003 into one of the largest railway systems in the world by route length and daily passenger volume.
