Obverse description Draped bust of Empress Catherine II facing right, her hair elaborately coiffed and adorned with a small imperial crown, with curled locks falling to the shoulder. The effigy is rendered in high relief with fine detail to the lace and drapery of the imperial robes. The Cyrillic legend encircles the bust along the rim, interrupted at the base by the Saint Petersburg mint mark СПБ in the lower field.

Reverse description Imperial Russian double-headed eagle displayed at centre, each head surmounted by a crown and the whole topped by a larger imperial crown above, the eagle bearing a shield on its breast depicting the mounted St. George slaying the dragon. The date 1766 is divided across the upper field to either side of the crowns, while the Cyrillic denomination legend encircles the device along the rim, reading clockwise from the left.
