Beschrijving keerzijde The reverse presents a finely engraved portrait of the Russian lyric poet Alexei Vasilyevich Koltsov facing slightly left in the left-center field, depicted as a young man in period dress with an open book in the lower foreground and stylized wildflowers and foliage framing the composition. To the upper right, a rural vignette depicts a peasant figure scything a grain field beneath a cloud-filled sky with a distant farmstead, evoking themes characteristic of Koltsov's pastoral poetry. The poet's birth and death years 1809 and 1842 are inscribed in two lines at center right, below which his name А. Кольцов appears in flowing Cyrillic cursive script. The overall design is executed in high-relief proof finish with frosted devices against a mirror field.

Aanvullende informatie

Alexei Koltsov, the Voronezh-born poet who died in 1842 at thirty-three, spent most of his short life as a cattle trader — a fact his literary contemporaries found either charming or embarrassing. Belinsky championed him anyway, forcing the St. Petersburg establishment to take seriously a man who had never attended university and composed verse between livestock markets. This coin was issued on the 200th anniversary of his birth.
