Ras al-Khaimah was the last of the Trucial States to join the UAE, and before federation it briefly pursued an aggressive numismatic program aimed squarely at the collector market rather than circulation. The "Essai" designation here marks this as a pattern or trial strike — KM#E2 places it firmly outside the regular issue sequence. Saqr bin Mohammed al-Qasimi had ruled since 1948 and would continue until his death in 2010, making his reign one of the longest of any Gulf ruler.
These Essai pieces were produced in limited quantities, typically by European mints contracted specifically for the purpose.
