Frederik IV struck these pieces during the closing years of the Great Northern War, when Denmark was actively campaigning against Sweden and the crown needed both hard currency and instruments of diplomatic credibility. The dual denomination — 2 Rixdaler in silver equivalent, 1 Courant Ducat in gold — reflects the deliberately ambiguous monetary accounting of the period, when Danish monetary policy was threading between Riksdaler-based northern trade and the ducat systems dominant in Central European finance.
Fr#221 is scarce across all three production years, with 1715 generally considered the most difficult to locate.
