Postal orders issued by Pos Malaysia for use in Sabah occupy an odd corner of notaphily — technically not banknotes, not stamps, yet collected by both camps. Sabah's geographic separation from Peninsular Malaysia meant that postal orders served as a practical remittance tool for rural communities with limited banking access well into the 2000s, particularly in interior districts where branch banking was sparse.
Pos Malaysia Berhad took over postal services from the Jabatan Pos Malaysia in 1992 following corporatization, making this a commercial instrument rather than a government one — a distinction that occasionally confuses cataloguers.
