A turbaned bust of Sultan Qaboos bin Said, facing approximately one-quarter to the left, is set within a raised circular frame at centre. To the left of the bust, architectural and industrial motifs — including a modern building, an oil derrick, and other structures — symbolise national development. To the right, a stylised lotus-flower medallion encloses an open book with a torch, representing education and enlightenment. Additional architectural elements appear in the lower field, all set against a mirror-proof background. The Arabic commemorative legend 'العيد الوطني العشرون' (Twentieth National Day) arcs prominently across the upper field, and the entire design is enclosed by a decorative rectangular-link border. |

Struck to mark the twentieth anniversary of Sultan Qaboos bin Said's accession following his 1970 palace coup against his father Said bin Taimur, a bloodless overthrow supported quietly by the British government amid concerns that the old sultan's isolationist policies were fueling a communist insurgency in Dhofar. Qaboos immediately opened the country, spending oil revenues on infrastructure, healthcare, and education that had been almost entirely withheld under his father's rule.
The Dhofar Rebellion itself wasn't fully suppressed until 1976, making the two-decade milestone a marker of genuine consolidation rather than mere ceremony.
