This billon issue reflects the dual-sovereignty arrangement forced on Tunisia after the 1869 financial crisis, when the Bey's government defaulted on its foreign debt and an international financial commission — controlled by France, Britain, and Italy — took over Tunisian fiscal administration. The coin acknowledges both the Ottoman sultan Abdulaziz and the Husainid Bey Muhammad III al-Sadiq, a pairing that encodes the entire uncomfortable tension of Tunisia's nominal vassalage to Constantinople against the reality of creeping European control.
Abdulaziz was deposed and died in 1876, which is why the type ends that year.
