In 1937, the Reichsmünzamt explored a brass composition for the 2 Reichspfennig, which had been struck in bronze since 1936. The pattern was never adopted — production continued in bronze through the war years. Brass was being increasingly reserved for military and industrial applications, which may explain why the substitution was tested but ultimately shelved at this particular moment.
