The 1933 Martin Luther 2 Reichsmark was issued to mark the 450th anniversary of Luther's birth, making it one of the first commemorative coins produced under the newly installed Nazi government. The regime found Luther's nationalism — particularly his later antisemitic writings — ideologically convenient, and the issue carried clear propagandistic overtones beyond its stated historical purpose.
KM#79 designates the circulation strike. Pattern pieces from this issue represent pre-production trials, likely struck at Berlin, and differ in surface finish or edge treatment from the released coinage.
