Obverse description Host coin obverse featuring the bust of the Spanish monarch facing right, surrounded by a circular legend reading DEI GRATIA and CAROLUS, partially visible around the periphery. Over the host coin, an insurgent countermark has been applied in the field depicting a double-headed eagle, the emblem associated with the forces of Vicente Guerrero during the Mexican War of Independence. The countermark is crudely struck, as typical of insurgent field mint production, and is positioned centrally over the royal effigy.
