| Obverse description | Host coin obverse bearing the draped bust of Charles IV facing right, struck at the Lima Mint. The bust is encircled by the Latin legend CAROLUS . IIII . DEI . GRATIA . with the date 1797 in the field. Applied over the host design is the Type I Costa Rican countermark: a radiant six-pointed star punched within a small incuse circle of approximately 7 mm diameter. A round hole, pierced at a later date, is present near the lower center of the coin, partially overlapping the host design. |

| Reverse description | Host coin reverse displaying the crowned Royal Arms of Spain — the quartered shield bearing castles and lions, flanked by the Pillars of Hercules with flowing banners — as struck at the Lima Mint for the Spanish colonial 2 Reales series. The circular legend reads .HISPAN. ET IND. REX. LIMAE. 2R. P., identifying the issuing authority, mint, denomination, and assayer initial. The design is presented in the characteristic machined style of late 18th-century Lima coinage. A central round hole, introduced during the Costa Rican cutting and holing process, interrupts the lower portion of the shield. The image is inverted relative to the obverse, consistent with medal alignment. |
