2 Reales Puebla - Insurgent Coinage

Zacatlán, a small town in the sierra north of Puebla, became an insurgent stronghold under commanders including Francisco Osorno, whose forces controlled enough territory by 1813 to justify issuing their own coinage. These copper pieces were emergency money in the most literal sense — the royalist economic blockade had drained silver from insurgent-held regions entirely, forcing local commanders to authorize copper substitutes that the Crown considered seditious contraband.

Crudely struck and intentionally local in circulation, most examples saw hard use before the region changed hands.
