Obverse description A crude hand-struck design depicting a mountain or volcanic landscape occupying the upper half of the flan, divided from the lower half by a horizontal line. The overall execution is characteristic of insurgent emergency coinage, with rough, uneven surfaces and an irregular coin border. The design elements are crudely rendered in low relief, reflecting the limited minting facilities available to the Oaxacan insurgent forces. The field shows extensive die rust and surface irregularities consistent with hammered coinage produced under wartime conditions.
